Nancy Pelosi, a Democratic representative from California, along with a group of Democratic legislators, urged President Joe Biden to stop selling weapons to Israel. The country is engaged in a large-scale military operation in Gaza against Hamas, the terrorist organization behind the deaths of more than 1,200 individuals and the abduction of hundreds on Oct. 7. Pelosi and several other Democratic lawmakers signed a letter asking Biden to reassess his decision to authorize additional military assistance to Israel, as reported by Politico.

“We write to express our shared concern and outrage regarding the recent Israeli airstrike which killed seven World Central Kitchen aid workers, including an American citizen,” the lawmakers wrote to Biden on Friday. “In light of this incident, we strongly urge you to reconsider your recent decision to authorize the transfer of a new arms package to Israel, and to withhold this and any future offensive arms transfers until a full investigation into the airstrike is completed.”

“In light of the recent strike against aid workers and the ever-worsening humanitarian crisis, we believe it is unjustifiable to approve these weapons transfers,” the lawmakers wrote. “We again strongly urge you to withhold any offensive weapons transfers until the investigation into the airstrike is concluded and, if it is found this strike violated U.S. or international law, those responsible are held accountable.”

The legislators are discussing an Israeli airstrike that occurred on Monday, which mistakenly hit a World Central Kitchen aid convoy in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of seven workers. The IDF has initiated an investigation and dismissed two senior officers due to their involvement in the incident.

The Biden administration is contemplating approximately $18 billion in military sales to Israel, which would include fighter jets, air-to-air missiles, and munitions. If authorized, this would mark the biggest military equipment sale to Israel since the conflict with Hamas began on Oct. 7. There was no immediate response from Pelosi’s office regarding a request for comment.
