Fani Willis, the District Attorney of Fulton County, Georgia, was notably absent from a scheduled debate, raising further inquiries about her behavior amidst the challenges confronting her and her team. During the Atlanta Press Club event, Democratic Party nominee contender Christian Wise Smith addressed the audience with an empty podium in front of him. Prior to the debate, a statement released by Willis’ campaign mentioned her decision to avoid interviews on significant cases handled by her office, including the election case and the YSL trial linked to Atlanta rapper Young Thug, in light of the upcoming May 21 primary.

“We understand that she cannot insist that panelists and her opponent avoid certain subjects, and consequently, her participation means likely repeatedly being unable to respond to questions, as well as risking saying something that defense counsel could make an issue in ongoing litigation,” the statement said.

Based on a report from Fox 5 Atlanta, a recent survey carried out by political advisor Fred Hicks indicated that Willis is in a strong position with 79% backing, whereas Wise Smith is significantly lagging behind at 9%. This indicates that the scandal related to the romantic relationship of the DA’s former special prosecutor, Nathan Wade, is not jeopardizing her chances of being re-elected, as per The Daily Wire’s coverage.

Courtney Kramer, a lawyer who previously interned in the Office of the White House Counsel under Trump, is now seeking the District Attorney position as a Republican candidate. Kramer, who identifies herself as a “MAGA attorney” on her Instagram profile, officially entered the race against Willis in March. Wise Smith, a Democrat who has a background as an Atlanta city solicitor and a Fulton County prosecutor, also submitted his candidacy during the same month, according to CBS News.

The party primaries are set to take place on May 21, followed by the general election on Nov. 5. Initially, Wise Smith mentioned that he had not yet made a final decision on challenging Willis, but he acknowledged that filing the necessary paperwork was the initial step in the process.

“Running for public office is not a decision I take lightly,” Wise Smith said. “I am heavily considering the options as I aim to reach a final determination on my candidacy — ultimately, I only want what is best for the citizens of Fulton County. Should I decide to launch my campaign officially, my team is prepared to take all the necessary steps.”
