(Big League Politics) – President Joe Biden announced executive action on gun control Thursday, calling gun violence an “epidemic” and an “international embarrassment.”
The pillars of his executive action include restrictions on so-called “ghost guns” and stabilizing braces, as well as a request directed at the Justice Department (DOJ) to publish model red flag laws that states can use as templates for their own legislation.
Ghost guns refer to homemade firearms made with parts that do not have serial numbers, while stabilizing braces are designed to improve the accuracy of pistols or rifles.
Biden also called on the DOJ to publish an annual report on gun trafficking to “better help policy makers” address the issue.
Democrats have made it clear that Biden’s executive action only represents the beginning of their gun control push. Press secretary Jen Psaki said Thursday that the White House will take more measures to combat the gun violence “epidemic.”
“Today the administration announced initial actions to address gun violence. There will be more. That is absolutely his commitment,” Psaki said. “And he also will use the power of his presidency, his voice, his political will, to advocate for actions in Congress.”
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer also said that Biden’s executive orders are “not a substitute for meaningful legislation.”
“While the president’s executive actions are critical, they are not a substitute for meaningful legislation to address the gun violence epidemic,” Schumer said in a statement. “The American people are demanding action from Congress, and I’ve committed to hold votes on the floor of the United States Senate on gun violence prevention legislation.”
