(The Post Millennial) – A professor at Cypress College in California was caught on camera berating a student who dared to suggest that police officers aren’t bad people.
According to The Daily Wire, earlier this week, Braden Ellis delivered a presentation on “cancel culture” and why it is “so destructive and tearing our country apart” for his communications class. In it, he referenced the “cancelling” of the kids’ TV show Paw Patrol, which features a police officer puppy, and portrays him as a hero.
Recently, there has been a push to brand all cops as evil and untrustworthy, with the outrage mob going after anything that doesn’t depict them as such.
In his presentation, Ellis repeatedly talked about the police and how they have been unfairly maligned.
Upon finishing his presentation, Ellis fielded questions from the audience. That’s when his professor jumped in. “So you brought up the police in your speech a few times”, she began. “So, what is your main concern? Since, I mean, honestly … the issue is systemic. Because the whole reason we have police departments in the first place, where does it stem from? What’s our history? Going back to what [a classmate] was talking about, what does it stem from? It stems from people in the south wanting to capture runaway slaves.”
“Maybe they shouldn’t be heroes. Maybe they don’t belong on a kid’s show, the classmate chimed in.
Ellis defended his position, stating that he thinks “cops are heroes and they have to have a difficult job.” Before he could get his next point out, the professor cut him off. “All of them?”, she asked. “A good majority of them”, Ellis replied. “You have bad people in every business…”
The professor then went on a rant describing how police have “committed atrocious crimes and have gotten away with it and have never been convicted of any of it.”
Ellis, remaining calm, stated that “people that do bad things should be brought to justice…”
The conversation shifted back to his presentation. “You’re saying police officers should be revered? Viewed as heroes? They belong on TV shows [for] children?”
“I think they are heroes in a sense because they come to your need and they come and help you”, said Ellis.
When asked who they would go to if they were in danger, the professor said, “I wouldn’t call the police”, adding that she doesn’t “trust them”, and that “[Her] life’s in more danger in their presence.”
The conversation ended soon after Ellis brought up guns. Afterwards, Ellis and his classmate thanked each other for sharing their views, even if they disagreed. Their professor did not seem as appreciative, crassly saying thank you to Ellis.
In an interview with The Daily Wire, Ellis said that he was “shocked to hear her comments about police”, but that he “stood firm in [his] beliefs.”
