(Big League Politics) – Former Speaker of the House Paul Ryan has broken his seemingly long silence on political affairs since retiring from office.
In a statement released Sunday, Ryan called the effort to stop Biden’s steal and keep President Trump in office for a second term “anti-democratic” and “anti-conservative.”
“Efforts to reject the votes of the Electoral College and sow doubt about Joe Biden’s victory strike at the foundation of our republic,” Ryan said. “It is difficult to conceive of a more anti-democratic and anti-conservative act than a federal intervention to overturn the results of state-certified elections and disenfranchise millions of Americans. The fact that this effort will fail does not mean it will not do significant damage to American democracy.”
“The Trump campaign had ample opportunity to challenge election results, and those efforts failed from lack of evidence. The legal process was exhausted, and the results were decisively confirmed. The Department of Justice, too, found no basis for overturning the result. If states wish to reform their processes for future elections, that is their prerogative. But Joe Biden’s victory is entirely legitimate.”
This statement comes on the heels of a dozen sitting and incoming Republican senators and many more Republican representatives vowing to object to the certification of a Biden victory. The twelve senators, whom the mainstream media is calling “Trump’s Dirty Dozen,” include Josh Hawley, Ted Cruz, Ron Johnson, James Lankford, Steve Daines, John Kennedy, Marsha Blackburn, and Mike Braun, as well as senator-elects Cynthia Lummis, Tommy Tuberville, Bill Hagerty, and Roger Marshall. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has pleaded with GOP senators to not object to Biden’s certification.
Paul Ryan retired from office after the 2018 midterms, serving as Speaker of the House from 2015 to 2019. Rep. Bryan Steil (WI-01) now holds Ryan’s former House seat.
