The campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris is earnestly seeking the endorsement of Taylor Swift, believing it may bolster her appeal, particularly given the noted “underperformance” among younger voters. On Thursday, CNN’s senior data reporter Harry Enten highlighted findings from various national surveys, which reveal that in September 2020, President Joe Biden enjoyed a substantial 28-point lead among voters aged 18 to 29.

Prior to Biden’s withdrawal from the reelection race in July of this year, he maintained a seven-point advantage. However, with Harris positioned at the forefront of the ticket in September, this lead has now expanded to a 15-point margin.

“Kamala Harris will absolutely welcome in the support of Taylor Swift if she can move young voters at all because the bottom line is: Kamala Harris is in fact not doing as well among young voters as you might expect a Democrat to necessarily be doing based upon history,” Enten told CNN’s Kate Bolduan.

Enten observed that one significant way in which Swift could assist the Democratic Party is by motivating individuals to register to vote, as this remains a challenging area for them. The data analyst then examined the battleground states of North Carolina and Pennsylvania, where there has been a decline in the number of Democratic voters registering compared to the same timeframe in 2020. In September 2020, approximately 560,000 individuals registered as Democrats in Pennsylvania, while around 415,000 did so in North Carolina. By September of this year, those numbers had fallen to roughly 128,000 in North Carolina and 169,000 in Pennsylvania.

“The bottom line is Republicans have been doing a significantly better job of registering voters than Democrats have been doing over the last four years and getting folks to switch over from Democratic registration to Republican registration,” Enten said.

“Kamala Harris will definitely welcome the idea if Taylor Swift can bring in some more younger voters, Democratic-leaning voters in the electorate because the bottom line is Republicans have been doing a heck of a lot better job of registering voters than Democrats have over the last four years,” Enten said.
