House Republicans have been presented with fresh video evidence in which former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) acknowledges her role in failing to secure the Capitol building prior to the January 6, 2021 protests. This footage, according to Politico, was captured by Alexandra Pelosi, a documentarian and the daughter of the former speaker, and has now been handed over to congressional investigators by HBO. Interestingly, this video was never broadcasted, nor was it shared with the January 6 Committee during their investigation into the Capitol riot.

The January 6 Committee did not issue subpoenas to Speaker Pelosi or her daughter for documentation related to the riot. The footage supports assertions made by former President Donald Trump that Pelosi bore responsibility for the inadequate security measures prior to the demonstration. Trump had proposed deploying the National Guard in the lead-up to the “Stop the Steal” gathering, but his offer was declined. (Critics later criticized Trump for not promptly dispatching the Guard during the riot.)

Pelosi is shown claiming: “We have responsibility … we did not have any accountability for what was going on there. And we should have. … Why weren’t the National Guard there to begin with?”

She continues: “I take responsibility for not having them [the National Guard] just prepare for war.”

Pelosi subsequently declined the Republican nominees for the minority roles on the January 6 Committee, marking the first instance in congressional history where the majority party leader took such action. She then personally selected two Republicans critical of Trump. This led to an investigation heavily skewed in one direction, as it omitted any inquiry into Pelosi’s involvement in the events. Nevertheless, despite its biased nature, the investigation’s findings have been utilized by prosecutors in legal proceedings against Trump and his followers.
