Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York has announced her intention to submit articles of impeachment against certain Supreme Court justices in response to the Court’s recent decision on presidential immunity. It is worth noting that the only Supreme Court justice to have been impeached in the history of the United States was Associate Justice Samuel Chase in 1805, who was ultimately acquitted by the Senate.

“The Supreme Court has become consumed by a corruption crisis beyond its control,” Ocasio-Cortez posted on X.

“Today’s ruling represents an assault on American democracy. It is up to Congress to defend our nation from this authoritarian capture. I intend on filing articles of impeachment upon our return,” she said, without naming her target.

The Court’s decision, with a six-to-three majority, established that presidents have limited immunity from criminal prosecutions for actions taken while in office. Following this, the case will be sent back for further review and is expected to lead to the dropping of some or all charges against the former president in federal court in Washington, DC, related to the Capitol riot on January 6, as stated by Joel Pollak from Breitbart News.

Former President Donald Trump, who was directly impacted by the ruling, hailed it as a significant victory for democracy. This ruling marked another positive development for Trump and his reelection campaign. In contrast, Democrats and the Biden campaign strongly criticized the decision. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) condemned it as a “disgraceful decision by the MAGA SCOTUS,” while Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) accused the Court of acting “rogue.”

“Today’s ruling doesn’t change the facts, so let’s be very clear about what happened on January 6: Donald Trump snapped after he lost the 2020 election and encouraged a mob to overthrow the results of a free and fair election,” a senior Biden campaign official said in a statement.
